Hunts Marine was started by Peter's father and is currently owned, managed and run by his son, Jon, who considers the Boat Show one of the most important events of the year. The recreational boating industry is worth about $2.1 billion a year to the Australian economy. Research shows that about $300 million worth of purchases are made during the Boat Show and a further $200 million during August as a direct result. And although in the past 42 years the boats and show have got bigger and better, the primary demographic of visitors has stayed pretty much the same: males over 30. What has changed, though, is that during the past decade, this group has been instrumental in motivating the family to attend the show with them. Despite the global financial crisis, boats were still big business in 2008 and 2009. Although slightly more boats were sold in 2009 than in 2008, the number of new vessel registrations in 2008 and 2009 remained the same. The most significant change from the tightening of the purse strings was an increase in sales for smaller vessels under six metres and a slight decrease in sales of boats of more than six metres. Another interesting trend over recent years has been the growing popularity in kayaking and canoeing and at this year's show, Sean Smith, also known as the Fat Paddler for his blog of the same name, will be talking about his love of this pastime. Guest speakers like Smith have always been a part of the Boat Show and this year's line-up will include around-the-world sailor Jessica Watson, adventurer Don McIntyre, James Castrission and Justin Jones, who paddled from Australia to New Zealand and industry specialists such as Kylie Short from Andrew Short Marine. And just like in the first show in 1968, this year's event will also feature the all-important fashion parade, because if you're going out on the water, it's important to look the part.
