Purr-chases . . . pet owners and their furry friends have a vast range of treats, toys and clothing from which to choose. Pet accessories have grown from practical doggie jumpers and cat toys to include almost anything you can buy to pamper your pet. It's a business that is increasing as pet owners indulge their canine companions or feline friends. Elise Schumacher started Paws Point Pet Deli and Boutique in Potts Point a few years ago after trying to find some special treats for her own two dogs, Louis and Vuitton. Her pair of pooches are far from the likes of the working dogs with which Schumacher grew up and they inspired the Sydney businesswoman to seek a style of couture fitting for their monikers. ''I come from a completely different background -- our family dogs were working dogs. ''But when I got Louis and Vuitton I started looking around for things like hand-painted dog houses and I couldn't find any. ''I thought, if I'm looking for things like this then maybe other people are, too.'' Schumacher now stocks everything from practical items such as leashes and collars right through to cat toys and special doggy beer. ''The season plays a big part in what people buy,'' she says. ''At the moment everyone is buying things that will keep their pets warm, from fleecy-lined coats to heated pet beds. Doggie hoodies are very popular. ''Some of our biggest sellers are those pieces that do make a statement. Things like the high-end label take-offs like Sniffany. ''And our clientele is very varied, from older ladies to mothers and daughters to young professionals who haven't yet started their own families. ''We've set up our store like a baby store with clothes on racks -- some days it's crazy in here with people trying the outfits on their pets. ''Cat people are more into the toy market and once they find something they like they are very loyal. We also do a range of special treats for dogs and cats, and customers can come in and select a mixed bag of treats like they would in a lolly shop.'' Doggles -- protective eyewear for dogs -- have been one of the best sellers for Jill Doyle, whose online store of the same name has not just vet-recommended products but also frivolous and fancy items. Doyle says environmentally friendly products are also becoming much more popular. ''People are interested in the environment and animal lovers are usually nature lovers as well,'' she says. ''We stock a range of eco-friendly harnesses and leads that are made from recycled drink bottles. There is also an increasing number of eco- friendly toys coming out. ''People want their pets to be safe. Just as they look for children's toys that aren't toxic, they do the same for their pets.'' She says while the ''plain old jumper'' is a very popular choice for customers, pet owners are keen on non-slip socks as well. ''The fancy dresses and jackets are more for fun and more for the owners,'' Doyle adds. ''And although it may seem a little strange to take your cat or dog to the park in a stroller or dog carrier, they too have a specific purpose, especially for older dogs who may find it difficult to walk all the time. ''It means owners can also take their pets [to the vets] without the old-fashioned big, heavy crates.''
