ANCIENT ranges cut through with spectacular gorges and waterfalls; pockets of rainforest and wetlands; stunning art; a vast coastline amid a tropical monsoon climate -- the Kimberley is one of Australia's last remaining wilderness areas. Distances are vast , wildlife is plentiful and town life unique. Seeing the north-west is a must. Here's how. Light aircraft The Bungle Bungle Range in Purnululu National Park is a fair schlep from everywhere but a short flight in a small plane from Kununurra lets you see the fantasy- scape of striped, dome-shaped hillocks from a bird's perspective. To reach the iconic vista, you fly over neat plots of fruit and sugar cane flanking the Ord River and the island-studded ''inland sea'' of Lake Argyle. 1800 095 500, slingair.com.au. King Leopold Air, (08) 9193 7155, kingleopoldair.com.au, flies from Broome to Cape Leveque, the gorgeous red, white and blue tip of the Dampier Peninsula. Flying takes you past one of the Kimberley's most unsung yet stunning beaches -- the dazzling stretch near the Aboriginal community of Lombadina. Fancy landing in the thick of things? Take a sea plane to the Horizontal Waterfalls further north at Talbot Bay, where the Kimberley's big tides perform a kind of limbo between two narrow passages. Helicopter It's a quick, thrilling way to get above it all. From Broome, take a flight along the coast (early morning is perfect), over the pearl farm at Willie Creek and the red cliffs at Gantheaume Point at the southern end of Cable Beach. Heli-fishing is a coveted east Kimberley pastime designed for anglers keen to land a barramundi in gorgeous, isolated terrain. Fisherfolk are flown in, furnished with shiny lures and the blessing of the pilot. Charters are available with Alligator Airways. 1800 632 533, alligatorairways.com.au. Heli- fishing is an option for guests at El Questro Wilderness Park, (08) 9169 1777, elquestro.com.au, and on chopper-equipped expedition boats. Boat The Kimberley coast is justifiably touted as one of the world's last frontiers. Barely touched, it's lined with tangled mangroves, bays of turquoise waters and sandstone cliffs and it teems with adventurer's appeal -- from crocodiles, turtles and sea birds to Aboriginal rock art and bracing water holes. Several expedition-style boats hug the island-dotted coastline between Broome and Wyndham, from March to September. The True North, (08) 9192 1829, northstarcruises.com.au, offers its 36 guests luxe beds, fine food and an on-board helicopter service. Smaller operators offer cruises of between six and 13 nights. 1300 245 565, broomekimberley .com.au. You can also get on the water from Kununurra, cruising the Ord River and Lake Argyle. Triple J Tours, (08) 9168 2682, triplejtours.net.au, has lively commentary on board to match the awe-inspiring scenery. Four-wheel-drive Off the beaten track is where the Kimberley's stars shine brightest. National parks -- among them Windjana Gorge, Wolfe Creek, Geike Gorge, Mitchell River and Purnululu -- are home to World Heritage-listed landmarks. Iconic drives include the 660-kilometre Gibb River Road between Derby and Kununurra. A four-wheel-drive with good clearance is essential, as is a copy of The Gibb River Road Guide. 1800 621 426, derbytourism.com.au. Stations such as Home Valley,
