But for many people, it's also a time to worry about how you let yourself go during the winter. Comfort eating in the colder months can lead to a reduction in fitness -- and a nasty surprise when winter clothing layers are shed. So what to do when the days get longer? According to the Health and Fitness Industry Association, more than 1.7 million Australians are members of the approximately 1570 fitness centres and gyms around the country. And a spokesperson from health chain Fitness First said gym membership surges as summer approaches. Summer also brings an increase in less- sweaty pursuits, such as meditation and yoga. Jo Fenwick, who runs Ki By Sea yoga classes on Sydney's northern beaches, says her groups increase from fewer than 10 participants in winter to nearly 30 at the peak of summer. ''In winter people are less likely to leave their homes for a class on a chilly night,'' Fenwick says. She adds that meditation retreats run by her business partner, Vicki Huston, also see a surge of interest as the temperatures rise.
