About 95 kilometres further east, Windjana Gorge is an ancient coral reef eroded by the Lennard River to create a wide, 100-metre gorge that cuts through the limestone of the Napier Range, exposing countless fossils. There's a lovely seven- kilometre return walk beside the river along the length of the gorge, where we get a look at fruit bats, corellas and freshwater crocodiles. Windjana Gorge is 145 kilometres from Derby and the Gibb turns to bitumen halfway along. Somehow it seems wrong to be back on the blacktop. The road feels eerily smooth and very, very fast. We pull into Broome, just as the sun sets into the sea. It's a fitting finale to one of outback Australia's great driving adventures. See gibbriverroad.net or westernaustralia.com. What's on in 2011 April Derby is the gateway to ironstone islands, white-sand beaches, amazing tides and superb fishing off the Buccaneer Archipelago. If you're not taking part in April's Buccaneer Fishing Classic, cod and groper are often caught at Derby wharf. derbytourism.com.au.
