It's just beautiful surrounds with the noises of nature. Kerry Gunther, resort spokeswoman Perfect pampering . . . tai chi is an excellent way to relax. Photo: Dean Osland SOMETIMES life gets in the way of looking after yourself, so a retreat that offers time to relax, exercise and indulge in beauty therapies can deliver much-needed ''me time''. The Byron at Byron on the NSW north coast isn't a traditional spa retreat but the upmarket hotel offers a mix of holidaying in an idyllic spot with on-site activities and more than enough opportunities to be pampered. ''It's not the complete kind of detox-type retreat,'' spokeswoman Kerry Gunther says. ''Ours is an enjoyable holiday as well and guests have some lovely spa experiences.'' The Byron at Byron offers spa treatments in the rainforest. ''We do a couples spa package and massage that's set up down on the boardwalk,'' Gunther says. Don't worry though, it's all very private and screened off, from both insects and passers-by. ''It's just beautiful surrounds with the noises of nature,'' she says. A recently refurbished 90-suite property, Byron at Byron has morning yoga classes, bicycle hire, a tennis court, gym and a swimming pool. It's a short stroll to the golf course. The hotel's spa menu includes facials, massage and intimate treatments for two. Packages at the resort start from $350 a night for two people. See thebyronatbyron.com.au. Closer to Sydney is the Villa Thalgo at The Sebel Resort & Spa in the Hawkesbury Valley at Windsor. The spa has one- and two-night pampering packages available. One-night packages include a five-hour spa session offering body exfoliation and a wrap, a spa, an Indian head massage, a 75-minute facial, a manicure and a pedicure. They cost $749 a person, twin share, or $829 for a single person. Two- night packages include six hours of treatments and cost $949 a person, twin share, or $1100 for an individual. See villathalgo.com.au. One of the better-known places to be pampered is The Golden Door, which has grown from a single retreat built in the Gold Coast hinterland in 1993. The chain now has a retreat at Pokolbin in the Hunter Valley and a spa at Salt Village in Kingscliff on the far north coast. The Pokolbin resort, known as Elysia, won the best destination spa-health retreat at the 2010 Australasian Spa Association Awards last year. Days at Golden Door start with a 6.30am tai chi class, followed by some walking, breakfast and a seminar on various topics such as detoxification or stress management. Other sessions held during the day include Pilates, aqua fitness, boot camp, indoor hockey, meditation and yoga. Depending on your mood, you might then opt for cardio boxing or spirit dancing. It's not all fitness and health though -- there are games nights and laughter and art workshops, too. There's also a spa on site to indulge in body treatments, facials and massage. Two-night packages start from $970 a person. See goldendoor.com.au. Rest and relaxation SPECIAL REPORT
