Having a ball . . . from the high-tech to low-tech, there's lots to keep the kids excited. Photo: Stuart Davidson T he Blue Mountains in the cooler months don't just suit energetic bushwalkers or couples hoping to get cozy around a fire, they're also great for children, with a diverse range of attractions. Here's a selection of the best. Zig Zag Railway This is one of the region's most iconic tourist attractions and it will enthrall everyone from toddlers to teens. For the littlies, there's the Day Out with Thomas experience, which allows them to meet characters from the Thomas the Tank Engine series. Older kids will enjoy the Wizards Express tour, which takes them from Platform 93G4 to Hogsmeade, enjoying a Harry Potter-style meal along the way. Other special events are held regularly and all trips from Clarence Station take passengers on a scenic journey. Scenic World You get a different perspective of the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains from the air and taking a ride on the Scenic Skyway, the world's first cable car with an electro-scenic glass floor, is something kids will never forget. They will be riveted as the floor becomes transparent while they travel almost 300 metres in the air over magnificent mountain valleys while taking in The Three Sisters, Katoomba Falls, Mount Solitary and the Jamison Valley. The ride is just one of several activities at Scenic World, which also includes the Scenic Railway, with the steepest incline of any railway in the world, the Scenic Walkway, a two-kilometre wheelchair-accessible boardwalk through the rainforest, and the Scenic Cableway. The Edge Maxivision Theatre The Edge takes big-screen viewing to new heights with a six-storey screen. As well as showing mainstream movies daily, visitors can learn about the history of the Blue Mountains in a special production. It tells the story of the Blue Mountains, from their creation millions of years ago, including footage of some of the most ancient and fragile areas of wilderness in the world, to the first European settlement of the region. Spectacular aerial shots of the pre-historic Wollemi pines and historical black-and-white images from the early days of European settlement add to the mystical intrigue of the story of the Blue Mountains. The Climbing Centre The Blue Mountains are famous for climbing, canyoning and abseiling and The Climbing Centre is a great place for kids to experience the thrill of getting to the top in a safe and all- weather environment. The centre has climbs that cater for all levels and abilities and is the ideal way to learn the skills needed for outdoor adventures. Both children and adults are fully instructed before being let loose on the indoor challenges. There is also a Junior Climbing Club, which is a great way for young climbers to improve their skills. Centennial Glen horse riding You can either saddle up or take the reins of a sulky and see the Kanimbla Valley in a whole new light. Centennial Glen Stables have something for the experienced rider through to those who have never sat on a horse. Confident riders can take off for an hour or a day on a fully guided mountain trail ride, while beginners can chose to have a lesson or be led through the valley under the guidance of fully trained staff. Those who don't want to sit high in the saddle can hook up a sulky and take a spin around the property. All helmets are provided. Blue Mountains Chocolate Company Just about every kid loves chocolate and at the Blue Mountains Chocolate Company, they can learn to make their own in a special three- hour workshop, which is run once a month. But you don't have to do the course to enjoy the chocolate company, which has more than 60 different handmade chocolates, home- made ice-cream, toffees, nougat and other sweet treats. Most days you can see the chocolate being made by chocolatiers, who will also explain what they're doing. Kids can sample the chocolates then work off their energy in the playground.
