Check refund, warranty and return policies. Check any feedback written about the seller to get an idea of their reliability. Check the freight or delivery methods and costs. Check currency exchange rates and whether sales tax or import duties apply. Make sure it is legal to import the goods being bought. Don't deal with sellers who are evasive, only have a mobile phone number and won't provide a contact name or address. Don't give out details such as bank or credit card account numbers unless you are sure who you are dealing with. Photo: iStock THE die-hard shopper will never give up the feel of the fabric or the atmosphere of a store but for many retail addicts online shopping has become the best alternative for getting those gifts, outfits and even foodstuffs they just can't seem to find anywhere else. Bricks-and-mortar stores will continue to exist but clicks-and- mortar shopping is now a significant part of the buying public's domain. E-business is becoming big business, even for big-name retailers who have a solid foundation in the traditional shopping world. And it is a much more convenient and cost-effective option for many niche businesses. Type a product you're looking for into a search engine and chances are, you'll find someone who has it -- from a specialty manufacturer to a private seller on auction sites such as eBay. You can even compare prices for the same item from different businesses using comparison shopping sites to ensure you get the best deal. But although shopping in cyberspace can be convenient, certain precautions still need to be taken. Anyone can set up an online store but there are ways to ascertain whether an e-business is legitimate or should be avoided. Checking to see if a website has a physical address and a phone number, and then contacting them, is one of the first steps consumers should take before parting with their cash. Rod Stowe, deputy commissioner for the NSW Fair Trading Department, says information like this is a useful indication that an online seller is more reputable. ''You could also Google the name of the company to see if there are any reviews or comments,'' Stowe says. ''People tend to write about something if they have had a good experience with it and, likewise, if they have had a bad one.'' One of the most concerning aspects of buying online is payment and Stowe suggests consumers always use a secure website, especially when giving credit card info. ''There is the lock symbol that is used on secure websites but it is not always displayed,'' he says. ''PayPal facilities are usually secure and some consumers use a separate credit card with limited credit for online purchases. ''One thing to remember is that if you do not receive your goods, you can always contact your bank and seek a charge-back.'' Stowe says there are tools to help consumers avoid being ripped off. ''Scamwatch (scamwatch.gov.au) was set up by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and lists scams that are prevalent in Australia. ''Then there is the National Fraud Information Centre (fraud.org) from the US.'' Consumers should also be aware that goods purchased on the internet from overseas are not always covered by NSW consumer- protection laws.
