THE migration routes of the international shopper have evolved. Once upon a time, the most stylish Sydney women boarded a plane to go shopping in London, Paris, New York, Tokyo or even Melbourne. Now Sydney is a shopping destination in which you can find the best of everything: all the top international designer labels, available within weeks rather than months after they appear on catwalks, plus the expanding pool of talented Australian designers who are making their name in Europe. For the shopper from overseas or interstate, Sydney also provides fantastic scenery, beaches and restaurants for a great holiday destination, plus the chance to buy the increasing number of Australian labels favoured by celebrities. For Sydney women, it is part of everyday life and with the expansion of boutique shopping and high-end labels into suburban locations, the benefits abound for shoppers with busy lives. Aside from Pitt Street Mall, with its growing number of windows of name-brand fashion, handbags, shoes, accessories, skincare, make- up and home decor, the major boutique shopping destinations to the east of the city are Oxford and William streets in Paddington, Woollahra, Bondi (Beach and Junction) and Double Bay. For the inner west, it's Darling Street, Balmain, and on the north shore, it's Military Road, Mosman. Chatswood Chase is now a shoppers' haven, with international brands Hugo Boss, Bisonte, Laura Ashley and Polo Ralph Lauren rubbing shoulders with Bettina Liano, Alannah Hill, Leona Edmiston, Lisa Ho, Zimmermann and sass & bide. On the northern beaches, Manly has McLean & Page on Wentworth Street, Surreal on Central Avenue for dresses and its neighbour, the fabulous Mint, which stocks women's and men's collections. Nearby, one-stop boutique The Dress Shop in Balgowlah is a style sanctuary for designer clothing and stocks the French label Bensimon plus Ginger & Smart, Jac+Jack and Tluxe, the cleverly cut premium classics favoured by models Miranda Kerr and Jennifer Hawkins. Further afield, in country areas, look for Swanky and Swish in Murwillumbah and, in the ACT, explore Manuka, Kingston and Lonsdale Street in Braddon. But among the burgeoning number of international brands now available in shops -- from Chanel to Gucci, Ferragamo and Versace -- are more affordable foreign labels, such as Gap. Opening on Wednesday in Sydney's Pitt Street Mall is the much- anticipated Spanish high-fashion/ super-affordable label Zara, which will receive a new garment delivery from Spain every two weeks. You can find individual brands by searching for their websites, or see westfield.com.au. A handy suburban Sydney guide is shopsuburbia.com. PROFILE Donny Galella Spoilt for choice . . . stylist Donny Galella. Photo: James Brickwood BOUTIQUE shopping is booming in Sydney, according to Westfield stylist Donny Galella. As a result, Sydney women (and men, too) are dressing more like their sophisticated counterparts in London, Paris and New York. ''I take women into Diane von Furstenberg, for example, and they discover her signature wraparound dresses are very flattering for curves,'' he says. ''Or we might go into Christian Louboutin [shoes], if only to window shop. ''Then there's the Australian boutiques --- Subi, Little Joe Woman, which have very good basics; Carla Zampatti, who makes classic clothes for real women; and, opening next week, Zara, fantastic and so affordable. ''It is now a myth that you have to go overseas to get the latest trends. All the shops are here --- or they are coming. ''Melbourne used to lead the fashion pace; no longer. ''Sydney has really stepped up its game. From Bally and Louis Vuitton to Bettina Liano and Leona Edmiston, it's all here.''
