For decades, Newtown has been regarded as Sydney's offbeat student hub. It still is but in the past year, the inner-west suburb has undergone a distinct foodie revolution, thanks to a burgeoning list of boutique bars, cafes and restaurants. ''It sounds silly but people from the eastern suburbs who have never been to Newtown are even coming -- it's like an adventure for them,'' says Mitchell Grady, the owner of Bloodwood, a restaurant that opened 18 months ago at the southern end of King Street, which has become a hot spot for new businesses. ''King Street is a little bit trashy -- cheap and cheerful -- but this end is changing and there's more boutique shops and some cool restaurants,'' he says. Grady and his two business partners, who worked together at Claude's in Woollahra, were so determined to snare a spot in the coveted area, known affectionately by locals as SoKi (south King Street), they waited months for the right place. It was clearly worth it -- people wait up to three hours on weekends for a table. Bloodwood has a good selection of boutique beers and an adventurous menu designed to be shared, though Grady stresses ''it is not tapas''. The renovation of Newtown station, due to be finished next year, as well as Marrickville Council's recent ban on smoking at footpath tables on the western side of King Street, has also boosted the area. A long-term restaurant owner, Linda Robertson, agrees the suburb has become ''a little bit gentrified''. ''It's still fairly grungy, which is what I like about it, I suppose, but it's getting a bit cleaned up,'' says Robertson, whose restaurant, Linda's, has gained a loyal following during its 17 years. ''I think people who would have previously travelled to the eastern suburbs for restaurants and cafes feel they don't have to.'' Formerly the head chef at Macleay Street Bistro in Potts Point, Robertson serves modern Australian food with a French twist and is renowned for her desserts, in particular the warm ginger cake with butterscotch sauce and sticky date ice-cream. Adding a quirky touch to the area is Coffee & A Yarn, a concept cafe where customers can shop for wool, knit at a communal table while they sip Coffee Alchemy lattes, and enjoy Manna from Heaven cupcakes.
