Car seat For the first year of baby’s life, you will need a rear-facing car seat and for one-year olds, a forward-facing baby seat. Many early-infant car seats are convertible but might not be as snug when your baby is young, so ensure they come with extra padding. All car seats need to be anchored properly to your vehicle. High chair Wooden high chairs might look good but plastic versions are much more convenient, with their removable trays and padded plastic seats that are easy to clean. Look for adjustable heights and reclining seats to accommodate your growing baby, lockable wheels for easy transportation from room to room, security straps to keep baby safe and a wide base for stability. Cot If your budget allows, pick a cot that turns into a toddler bed. While these are more expensive, it saves you money later on. Ensure it doesn’t have sharp edges, the dropside locks securely and it has an adjustable mattress height, which can be lowered as your baby grows. Mattresses must fit with only a few finger spaces around the edge. Change table Not particularly necessary but they can be convenient. Buy one with raised sides that reduce the potential for falls. Make sure folding styles have locking devices to stop sudden collapses. And remember to always have one hand on the baby at all times, especially if they are wriggling. As an alternative to a change table, use a change mattress on the floor or a doubled-over towel. Baby carrier You want easily adjustable straps you can fix with one hand and connection points that don’t pinch your baby’s skin. Government safety guidelines recommend against using backpack-style carriers with metal framework before your bub is four months old, as most babies under four months are not yet able to hold their heads up above the top of the carrier on their own. 1 2 3 4 5 6 the essentials 1 2 3 4 5 6 1.
