Natasha Silva-Jelly explains what works, whatever the weather. The heat is on Hotstuff... take care in the sun. Photo: Marina Oliphant W e all have our own beauty rituals but as the weather and the seasons change, so should our regimes. With summer on our doorstep, now's the time to switch to the beauty rules for the new season. Healthy make-up The latest look in make-up is to barely wear any. And when you do, ensure those products come with skin-enhancing properties and inbuilt sun protection. When the sun hits, swap your usual foundation for mineral make-up (try Priori CoffeeBerry Natural Perfecting Minerals), which gives an ultra- natural finish, protection from the sun and is so good for the skin you could sleep in it. As for colour, look for waterproof products, and stains and tints instead of full-colour washes. The new Halcyon range by BECCA will not wash off in the water and promises a gentle flush through soft beachy shades such as golden coral, shimmery pinks and glittering bronzes. Follow the lead of the A-list and ditch the mascara in favour of semi-permanent lashes (try Mink), which look totally natural and last six weeks. Or even better, give your own lashes a boost with the new Priori eyelash serum that contains peptides that actually stimulate the growth of your eyelash follicles. Long-lasting manicure No beauty devotee would be without a precision manicure and the latest trend is gel applications that are ultraviolet heat-sealed to last two to three weeks. They're gentle and require no drying time. Look for CND Shellac, (02) 9363 3662, and Jessica GELeration, (02) 9328 5028, which both have lots of lovely shades for summer. Just add water Summer skin is thirsty skin, so make ''hydration, hydration, hydration'' your new mantra. Add a serum to your daily skin care routine -- make sure you apply it after cleansing and before moisturiser (its also a good idea to keep it in the fridge to cool and soothe the skin). Regular exfoliation is also crucial to slough off the dead skin cells so your skin can absorb moisture. Do yourself a favour and apply an ultra-hydrating moisture mask two to three times a week. Botox lite Prevention is always better than cure but no amount of sunscreen can ward off chronological ageing. When it comes to rejuvenation, the trend is towards a more natural-looking face according to the director of The Clinic at Bondi Junction, Lisa Sullivan- Smith. ''Botox is still our most popular treatment but clients can have less when their skin looks good, especially for those over 40,'' she says. ''Fillers can also provide relief without Botox, for a liquid face life that's pain-free and gives great results for two years. The frozen look is out. Our focus is on good skin health and we're having fantastic results with Fraxel, the only laser that eliminates sun damage and creates a rejuvenated complexion,'' she says. See theclinic.net.au. Cover up It's no secret the harsh Australian climate is skin-care enemy No. 1. Fight ageing by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen -- look for a number on the back to make sure it's approved by the Australian Cancer Council. Slather it on 20 minutes before venturing outside and reapply regularly, especially when swimming. Swapping your usual moisturiser and foundation routine for a tinted sun block -- Dermalogica Ultra Sensitive Faceblock, or Invisible Zinc Tinted Daywear -- will also keep you protected without leaving you greasy.
