LIFE in the Kimberley is dictated by its two seasons: the wet and the dry. The tropical downpours and flashy thunderstorms that frequent Australia's north-west from October to March mean only adventurous travellers come to explore during this season. Most of the Kimberley's major events unfold during drier months, when the weather isn't quite so nail- biting for organisers. We've trawled this year's events calendar and found the very best reasons to visit. March This month signals the start of the natural phenomenon known as Staircase to the Moon -- when the full moon rises over mud flats exposed by extremely low tides, creating an illusion of stairs climbing all the way to the moon. The spectacle unfolds three nights a month through to October, starting from March 9 at 6.40pm. The best viewing spots are Roebuck Bay in Broome, Cooke Point in Port Hedland, the Lookout at Cossack, Hearson's Cove near Karratha and Sunrise Beach in Onslow. australiasnorthwest.com. April The opening of a new Kimberley property is always news but this month two extraordinarily remote resorts will fling open their doors. Kuri Bay is 220 kilometres north- east of Derby, or 105 minutes by helicopter or seaplane from Broome. Built in 1956 as a pearl farm, the five- room lodge opening on April 1 has hosted guests of the Paspaley pearling family over the years. The latest guests will tuck into pearl meat and fish, along with wines from the Paspaleys' NSW vineyards. Four-night deals including one night at Broome's Pinctada Cable Beach Resort cost $4799 a person; five-night deals cost $5599 a person. kuribay.com.au. In the Kimberley's north-east, about 150 kilometres north of Wyndham or one hour by plane from Kununurra, The Berkeley River -- a 20-room resort -- will open on April 13. A minimum two-night stay starts from $2500 a person, twin share. kuribay.com.au, berkeleyriver.com.au. May --- June Halls Creek, an isolated outback town near the Bungle Bungles, finds itself full to overflowing each year when Kimberley musical talent comes together for the Nguyuru Waaringarrem Halls Creek Music Festival, running this year from May 4 to 6. westernaustralia.com. The East Kimberley community showcases its many delights during the Argyle Diamonds Ord Valley Muster from May 25 to June 3; the Airnorth Kimberley Moon concert on June 2 is a highlight. The muster's 30-plus events unfold mainly in the historical port of Wyndham and modern town of Kununurra 100 kilometres away but there's also
