Bush comfort . . . from left, Berkeley River lodge; Mornington Wilderness Camp; Bell Gorge. Photos: Wayne Lawlor, Veronique Mandray SAY goodbye to drop-hole toilets and sleeping bags. This coming season, which begins in April, travellers to the Kimberley will have a choice of new or refurbished lodges and camps offering tents or rooms with en suites, hot showers, high thread count sheets and quality wine. So, don't delay. Pack your bags and head to the Kimberley to soak up the sights of one of the oldest landscapes on the planet. For naturalists The highlight of a stay at Mornington Wilderness Camp is an opportunity to observe the Australian Wildlife Conservancy in action, an independent, non-profit organisation dedicated to conserving Australia's threatened wildlife and ecosystems. In Mornington Sanctuary, these include the Gouldian finch, purple-crowned fairy-wren and red goshawk. There's an interpretive centre with displays on conservation activities at the sanctuary and research staff conduct regular educational talks. Guests will enjoy bird watching, nature walks and exploring Dimond and Sir John gorges. For those who don't want to pitch their own tent, there are 10 safari tents with queen-size beds, fresh linen, en suites and minibars. A central dining area and bar serves meals and wine and prepares picnic hampers. All proceeds are reinvested in the conservation of the Kimberley's wildlife. Where: Mornington Wildlife Sanctuary, 550 kilometres east of Broome. Getting there: By 4WD or light aircraft flight from Fitzroy Crossing or Broome. Cost: A safari tent with full board costs $270 an adult and $120 a child twin share (minimum two nights). australianwildlife.org. For luxury lovers Be the first to stay in one of The Berkeley River's 20 ocean view chalets, when it opens on April 13. Designed to have minimal impact on landscape, the new luxury property sits atop a coastal dune among native vegetation and has expansive views of the Timor Sea, Reveley Island and the Berkeley River. A standout feature of the suites are the private open-air bathrooms, where guests can soak under the stars in outdoor showers and bathtubs. The main lodge is designed for indoor and outdoor dining and has a small conference centre and 20-metre lap pool. Activities include guided coastal cruises, bush and beach treks, fishing, helicopter flights and exploring waterfalls. Where: Berkeley River is 150 kilometres north-west of Wyndham. Getting there: There is no road access. Float plane transfers from Kununurra take about one hour. Cost: From $897 a person a night (minimum two-night stay) includes float plane transfers, accommodation, meals and touring. Alcohol is extra. berkeleyriver.com.au. For family safaris Award-winning adventure tour operator Kimberley Wild Expeditions' new camp in Purnululu National Park will allow the company's touring customers to sleep in comfort this season. The Bungle Bungles Safari Camp offers a dash of luxury for visitors there to explore World Heritage- listed Purnululu National Park. The star of the park -- which covers an area of 240,000 hectares and is 350 million years old -- is the Bungle Bungle range, which has the wow factor with its spectacular beehive dome-shaped sandstone towers and breathtaking gorges. The new camp has eco-safari tents with twin or double beds, shared flushing toilets and also boasts a communal meal area with an open campfire. Where: North of the Three Ways Junction, Purnululu National Park. Getting there: Kimberley Wild Expeditions has small group adventures from Broome travelling in custom-built 4WD vehicles.
