Radiance . . . clockwise from main, Linda Wehbi of Fleur de Lys Medispa applies gold foil; the spa's Moroccan-style hammam; massage in one of 17 treatment rooms at Chateau Elan in the Hunter Valley. Photos: Janie Barrett THE newest spas across NSW are not just about facials and massages, they are designed to take guests away from daily stresses and even transport them to ancient Egypt. It is said that Cleopatra slept in a gold mask to ward off the signs of ageing. Now Sydneysiders can experience a similar treatment at a Woollahra spa. Fleur de Lys Medispa has a treatment featuring a 24-carat-gold foil that it says promotes radiance and reduces lines and wrinkles. The spa says the 80-minute facial, which costs $399, encourages blood flow, speeds up cellular processes and sparks regeneration. It says the treatment also reduces the appearance of sun damage and age spots and has a tightening effect. The spa's director, Linda Wehbi, says using the gold sheets, made by Japanese company Umo, is something that harks back to ancient cultures. ''Gold is well known for its anti-ageing qualities and is thought to have numerous healing benefits that have been used for centuries by oriental cultures,'' she says. As well as offering the unusual treatment, the spa, which opened in 2010, is inspired by Moroccan architecture and traditions, from its decor down to the dates and almonds guests receive on arrival. One of its signature features is its hammam -- a scented room based on traditional Moroccan bathhouses, where a variety of treatments are performed on a heated marble table. ''I have always been intrigued by the therapeutic benefits of the hammam and enchanted by the scents of the oils and perfumes and their therapeutic and healing benefits,'' Wehbi says. The hammam's heat stimulates the immune system, can help relieve joint and muscle pain, and is beneficial for respiratory problems, she says. Prices start at $300 for a 90-minute treatment, which features a full-body exfoliation and massage. See fleurdelysmedispa.com.au. Another oasis in Sydney is the Panpuri Organic Spa, which opened in Pyrmont last year and was designed to make guests feel as though they have left the city far behind. ''When people enter the spa, we want them to feel like they are in their own luxurious cocoon and not in Sydney any more,'' the marketing manager, Melissa Milne, says. ''It's almost like a small trip away; like the same feeling as when you step off a plane and you're in an exotic new country.'' Organic products are central to the spa -- right down to the bedding. ''The point of it is that as soon as you enter, everything you see and touch is pure and natural,'' Milne says. One of Panpuri's signature treatments is the Mali Moonlight Massage, which combines aromatherapy, acupressure and reiki in a 60- or 90-minute session, which costs $165 or $240. See panpuriorganicspa.com.au. And outside Sydney, there are resort spas that resemble country oases. Chateau Elan in the Hunter Valley opened two years ago on the Vintage golf course estate and has a day spa with 17 treatment rooms. ''It's very much focused on having a calm and relaxed experience and releasing stress,'' the operations manager, Felicity Thwaites, says. ''Spa guests look straight out over a large, bright-green lawn area and over the 10th fairway of the golf course, so all they see is trees and grass.'' See chateauelan.com.au. Similarly, at Bowral Day Spa at the Gibraltar Hotel, the golf-course setting enhances the experience. ''It's a very serene atmosphere here,'' the spa's co-ordinator, Karen O'Reilly, says. ''When you look out the windows, you're overlooking the course and the 100-plus-year-old pine trees and the lake -- it's a tranquil experience.'' See gibraltarbowral.com.au.
