Modern fitness equipment is designed to be convenient, writes Tanya Ryan-Segger. Don't sweat the personal gym stuff While the idea of setting up a gym at home appeals to many people, a common hurdle has been how to find the space. But as the design of some equipment has changed, space is becoming less of an issue. Many exercise machines have shrunk in size and can now fold away. The owner of Xtreme Fitness Australia, Rohan Belmore, says home gyms are popular for a range of people, such as expectant or new mothers wanting to exercise in private, people who are intimidated or uncomfortable in communal gyms or those who don't fancy the outdoors during the cooler months of the year. But no matter what your situation, the fundamental thing to get right when setting up a gym in a house is pinpointing what you, and other potential users, hope to gain from the venture. If burning body fat is the sole priority, a single piece of equipment -- such as a treadmill or exercise bike -- makes sense and is a reasonably affordable and unobtrusive option. ''Some [exercise bikes] take up as little room as a [single] metre squared,'' Belmore says. You could expect to pay about $1000 to $1500 for a good- quality treadmill and many equipment retailers offer interest- free finance that can be paid off in regular instalments -- rather than taking a big hit upfront. But to build muscle strength, a combination of resistance and cardio equipment is required. Innovations such as the CardioGym 3500 -- a cable or pulley-style weight system and exercise bike in one -- are proving increasingly popular but can come with high price tags. The CardioGym is among those products that solve the space dilemma, as it folds away to look like a cabinet or cupboard. ''Gym [product] lines that fold away into a cupboard are a real turning point in the sector,'' Mark Garrahy, of Workout World, says. Yet before parting with any money, testing the waters by hiring exercise equipment might be a good waytoseeifahomegymisforyou. Hire costs should be weighed up, however, as most companies offer equipment for a minimum period of time, usually three months, and delivery charges are often added. But not all home exercise solutions need be expensive. A northern beaches landscaper, Anthony Figgis, says backyards can be ideal and cost- effective recreational spaces. Figgis says investing in a few basic items, such as a skipping rope, medicine ball, even placing a garden bench at an appropriate height, or using existing stairs, can be cheap ways to get fit without spending a fortune or eating up space inside the home. But if your heart is set on exercising inside, a partner at Rudolfsson Alliker Associates Architects, Joseph Alliker, says out- of-the way areas -- such as basements, garages or sheds -- are more preferable to a room inside the main part of a house. TIPS FOR SETTING UP YOUR SPACE 1. Along with measuring floor space, don't forget to measure the ceiling height of a home gym area. 2. Make sure the floor is level --- exercise equipment might not be stable otherwise. 3.Ifagymisinaroominthemain part of a home, make sure it has a door that can be locked when not in use and if children are around. 4. If installing your own equipment, read the instructions carefully and if in doubt, ask for professional advice. 5.
