Photos: Virginia Star, Danielle Smith railway station, makes it easy to find and from which to get home. The State Theatre is another ornate venue that's available for larger get-togethers. The venue, which opened in 1929, can host more than 2000 guests, or as few as 14. It is part of Sydney's Unique Venues Association, which represents more than 50 locations that can give parties and launches an unusual feel. The association includes favourites such as the Powerhouse and National Maritime museums, Luna Park, Customs House, even Andrew (Boy) Charlton Pool, if you think your guests will look good in swimming costumes. The pool overlooks the harbour, where there are plenty of other venues for hire. Fort Denison is available for big- budget events during the evenings. The venue has excellent views of the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House and is small enough to retain an intimate ambience. The island can accommodate more than 200 people, but as it is part of the national parks network, a ranger, who can conduct tours of the island for curious guests, needs to be on hand, at the hirer's expense. An upmarket menu for cocktail or sit- down functions is also available. Other islands suitable for parties include Cockatoo and Shark islands. But for bigger events away from Sydney, the vineyards of the Hunter Valley take guests to the source -- and offer somewhere to stay rather than having guests hailing a cab on George Street late at night. The Bluetongue Brewery is also in the valley, if guests are more partial to beer. Companies such as Hunter Valley Events can do the legwork, suggesting venues based on the number of guests and your budget. As well as wineries such as Tempus Two or Tamburlaine, and restaurants such as Briar Grillade, Hunter Valley Events can even park your party in a hangar at Cessnock's airport, which is available for up to 600 guests. 59 SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2012 THE SUN-HERALD S
