'' It is the sense of letting your hair down that makes themed parties popular. Allison Barrett, My Perfect Party Get your party swinging from the moment people arrive by setting a theme. It's a proven ice-breaker and the excitement often begins well before party day as guests plan their outfits and try to guess what others will be wearing. Professional party planner Allison Barrett, of My Perfect Party, says themed events have increased in popularity. ''I think it is the sense of fun and letting your hair down that makes themed parties so popular. ''Life is stressful and putting on a different outfit can give you a change from your everyday world by letting you become another character.'' Barrett says if you are going to have a themed party, it is essential to put effort into creating the right atmosphere. Decorations don't have to be expensive -- try Martha Stewart's website for inspiration -- and don't be afraid of rearranging your furniture and getting rid of homely cushions and ottomans. A Hollywood party, for those who want guests to dress up in their finest, can be enhanced by quotes or trivia printed from the internet and hung in large frames throughout the house, while a gangster party may feature ''wanted'' posters and red and white napkins. Barrett says great food is more important than themed food, but you can tie it in with presentation, perhaps serving canapes spelt out in the word ''Hollywood'' or on an unusual serving tray to fit the chosen theme. An easy and effective theme is a white party. Barrett says most people have white serving trays, white furniture can be hired in and it is easy to get LEDs to illuminate the party area. Lighting, she says, is crucial and worth hiring. A director of Events by Heidi & Kate, Kate Barnes, agrees. ''If you have to cut your budget anywhere, don't do it on lighting,'' she says. Fairy lights, lanterns and festoon lights can be found cheaply online and look effective, while the right use of candles can also set the tone of the occasion. Barnes says decor for a Moroccan- themed party is easy to come by and affordable, and involves lots of throw cushions, draped materials and candles, while shared food and tables encourage communication. Themed cocktails are an effective way of getting partygoers into the mood, whether they be gin cocktails for a Gatsby theme or fluoro drinks for a '70s theme. Barnes says a theme can be simple or over-the-top, but should reflect the host while being broad enough to ensure conservative partygoers feel as comfortable as the extroverts. Guidelines At cocktail parties, aim to serve eight to 10 canapes, plus one or two substantial canapes, per guest over four to six hours. Even cocktail parties should have seating; aim to have enough for at least 25 per cent of your guests. Order more wine than you think you will need. Some of the big chains let you return unopened cases. Use outdoor spaces. Hire heaters in winter and a marquee in summer. Don't be afraid to rearrange the furniture. Mood lighting is essential.
