The Sydney Morning Herald Friday, September 28, 2012 7 SPECIAL REPORT Envy of all . . . (clockwise from main) Maybanke in Birchgrove; an Italianate trophy in Hunters Hill; John Symond's Point Piper pad; Lindsay Fox's Boomerang. Finger Wharf in Woolloomooloo, with views straight out to the Harbour Bridge and the fleet of the naval base right alongside. The $14 million penthouse at the very end belongs to Russell Crowe. Join the handful of fishing folk who regularly toss a line in directly below and you can look up and take in its impressive proportions -- and appreciate that iconic view. Other celebrities who own here are John ''Golden Tonsils'' Laws and singer Delta Goodrem. The once-derelict wharf was spared demolition in the 1990s and instead transformed into a boutique hotel, restaurants and apartments. 6. ADMIRALTY HOUSE AND KIRRIBILLI HOUSE, KIRRIBILLI Moving to the north side, there's the prime piece of headland at Kirribilli that houses the official Sydney residences of the reigning prime minister (Kirribilli House) and governor-general (Admiralty House). Just about every ferry coming and going from Circular Quay past the Opera House to the north shore gives passengers a clear view of the twin estates, with their manicured lawns and gardens stretching down to the water. The Kirribilli ferry obviously has the plum view. Both houses were built in the mid-1800s; the distinctive colonnaded verandah of Admiralty House was added later. On September 9, visitors had their annual chance to visit both. Picnic in the grounds and you can pretend to be prime minister for a day. 7. LAURIE SUTTON'S FORMER HOUSE, MOSMAN The home of retired car dealer Laurie Sutton and his wife for 35 years, until its sale this year for $20 million, this 5154-square-metre mansion in Bay Street is reputedly the suburb's largest harbourfront estate. Described as ''Hawaii meets Hamilton Island'', it has an idyllic Middle Harbour location overlooking Quakers Hat Bay. The four-bedroom, five-bathroom residence is set in lush gardens with a tennis court, pool and extensive boating facilities, including a shed, slipway, jetty and floating deep- water marina. You can catch glimpses from the foreshore, but bobbing around in a boat is probably the best vantage point. 8. KAHALA, HOPETOUN AVENUE, BALMORAL On the other side of Mosman, at Balmoral, is Kahala, which was snapped up by its neighbour, Ros Oatley-Lambert -- ex-wife of former Southcorp wine chief Keith Lambert -- last November for about $19 million. The 1485-square-metre Hopetoun Avenue estate is easy to see from the harbour. A boatshed is linked to the house by 160 steps, although Kahala was sold with DA approval for a 34-metre tunnel linking the house to the waterfront, as well as designs for a three-level residence featuring five bedrooms, seven bathrooms, two pools and garage space for up to eight cars. Oatley-Lambert owns the adjoining Rivendell, set on a 2000-square-metre double block. It apparently has limited boating facilities, which was part of the allure of buying next door. 9. WOOLWICH, HUNTERS HILL Over on the Hunters Hill peninsula in Angelo Street sits the massive Italianate residence of orthopaedic surgeon Dr Malcolm Glase. It sits on 2037 square metres of Lane Cove riverfront land, complete with swimming pool, private beach, jetty and pontoon. With brilliant eyesight or a pair of binoculars, you might catch a view from Longueville Park on the other side of the harbour. Otherwise a cruise of the Lane Cove River will take you right by it. 10. MAYBANKE, WHARF ROAD, BIRCHGROVE This street in Birchgrove is prized as one of the most intact Victorian/ Federation waterfront streets in Sydney and development is strictly monitored by Leichhardt Council. Number 23 is Maybanke, set high above the water on a 528-square- metre block, with a boatshed, boat pen and shared jetty. The circa 1871 house fronts the street, so you can certainly appreciate its Victorian gothic revival architecture from there, but the best view is waterside. You can probably get a peek from Ballast Point Park at the end of Wharf Road.
