Susan Gough Henly suggests some highlights to get your trip started. Lima, Peru Don't miss: Visit the Bohemian Barranco quarter and its colonial mansions now filled with boutiques and bars. The Larco Museum (museolarco.org), in a mansion built on a pre-Incan temple site, showcases Peru's remarkable artisanal history in gold, jewellery, textiles and ceramics. Food-lover's highlight: Ceviche and pisco sour and an array of potatoes and corn. Where to eat: Gaston Acurio's Astrid & Gaston (astridygaston.com) and Pedro Schiaffino's Malabar (malabar.com.pe) feature indigenous foods such as guinea pig and Amazonian lucuma, a tropical fruit. Both are listed in San Pellegrino's world's top 100 restaurants. Hotel to remember: Orient Express Miraflores Park Hotel overlooks Lima's spectacular Costa Verde coastline (orient- express.com). The Westin Lima is the tallest building in Peru with the country's fanciest spa, plus Maras restaurant, Lima's molecular gastronomy trailblazer (westinlima.com.pe). Best shopping district: Larcomar (larcomar.com) is a shopping centre built into the El Malecon clifftop park overlooking the ocean. Dedalo (dedaloarte.blogspot.com) offers Peruvian folk art, contemporary jewellery, clothing and homewares in a Barranco art deco mansion. What to buy: Alpaca, silver, high-quality crafts and semi-precious stones. Iconic sights: Lima's UNESCO-listed historic centre has Spanish colonial buildings with Moorish balconies framing Plaza de Mayor. Check out the baroque cathedral housing the tomb of Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro and the nearby Convent of Santo Domingo. Buenos Aires, Argentina Don't miss: Take a tango class in a milonga hall such as Confiteria La Ideal (confiteriaideal.com) or Tango Cool (tangocool.com). The Sunday Feria de Mataderos is a celebration of Argentina's rural traditions with folk music, traditional crafts, horsemanship, and regional food. Food-lover's highlight: Steak, steak and more steak and, when you're sick of it, great Italian food. Malbec red wine. Oh, and any dessert with dulce de leche, a milk candy created by slow-heated milk and sugar until it caramelises -- indispensable to daily life. Where to eat: The two best steakhouses -- the fancier Cabana las Lilas (laslilas.com/restaurant.php), and La Cabrera (www.parrillala cabrera.com.ar) in Palermo Soho.
