Don't stress when it comes to pampering yourself, writes Jason Mountney. 'I like the whole ritual; the gowns, slippers and tea.' Jane McKenzie, businesswoman Day spas can give you all the benefits of a trip away, without negotiat- ing Kingsford Smith or finding someone to watch the dog. Here are four to look out for -- no passport required. Man-style Paul Anderson, who owns Mankind in Surry Hills, says demand for his ser- vice has been strong since he opened the doors nearly nine years ago. "We were seeing 300-400 guys a month even back then," he says. "Before, guys were just going to where their wives and girlfriends went." He says men mainly go to day spas for one of three reasons: to look good, to relax or to enjoy a treatment. "A lot get waxing just to feel better about themselves," he says, adding that back waxing is popular. "A lot of sports guys come and wax, espe- cially cyclists and football players, who get a lot of grass burns and are often getting taped up at games. "As far as relaxation goes, it is easier to spend $100-$150 rather than two grand for a holiday, so we are seeing more interest as the econ- omy tightens. "And when they get treatments, men want results, particularly with facials and problem skin." Mankind: 425 Crown Street, Surry Hills, 9081 0222, mankind.com.au. Also try Face of Man; treatments for him in the heart of town. Level 10, 300 George Street, city. Quick break (from the kids) Jane McKenzie, a 39-year-old busi- nesswoman from Enmore, took a break from her two children with her partner at the Langham Hotel, on the city's northern edge. Previ- ously known as the Observatory, the hotel prides itself on its day spa, loc- ated in its basement. They had a couple's massage, but it was the time spent before and after the treatment that McKenzie enjoyed the most. "I like the fact I could laze around the pool with the papers and visit the sauna before our couple's massage," she says. "I like the whole ritual about the visit; the gowns, the slip- pers and the tea." The venue's proximity to the city meant her trip was topped off with a lunch where she "didn't have to make sure one of her kids wasn't playing with the salt shakers". Langham Hotel: 89-113 Kent Street, city, 8248 5250, Sydney. langhamhotels.com.au. Also try Endota; pampering in the heart of Sydney. 7/1 Martin Place, city. Take a spa 'holiday' With its tiled walls, body wraps and scented oils, the hammam-style bath treatment at Fleur de Lys in Wool- lahra will give you a taste of Morocco for less than $200. The treatment involves covering a client with black soap, which is then scrubbed off as he or she lies on a heated marble table. The skin is nourished with a mixture of clay and rose water, before oil is rubbed over the body to finish. Fleur de Lys: 2a Queen Street, Woollahra, 9361 4441, fleurdelysmedispa.com.au. Also try Pan ˜puri; a trip to Indochina without a motor scooter in sight, 55 Miller Street, Pyrmont. Outoftown Sometimes you need to leave the city. Bells at Killcare offers spa treat- ments just minutes from one of the central coast's best beaches, and guests can dine at Stefano Manfredi's restaurant attached to the guesthouse. Bells at Killcare: 107 The Scenic Road, Killcare Heights, 4349 7000, bellsatkillcare.com.au. SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2012 THE SUN-HERALD 65 ENHANCE YOURSELF
