Rise to the occasion D ESPITE THE WORK, LIFE and family juggle, publisher and editor Sally Webb finds time to make elaborate birthday cakes for her two children. ‘‘It is a real challenge,’’ Webb says. ‘‘Especially because both the kids’ birthdays are in February and only 12 days apart. It is a chaotic time, school is just back, and one child can’t have a better cake than the other, so it requires a certain level of military precision.’’ Over the years, Webb has risen to the challenge. ‘‘I started small, with a number ‘1’ for our son Archie,’’ she says. In the years since, Webb has graduated to a 3D train complete with multiple carriages, a 2D helicopter from a template that she designed herself and a rainbow butterfly for daughter Lulu’s fifth birthday. Lulu has already earmarked years of future birthday cakes in her mum’s cookbooks. Webb, though having successfully designed templates for cakes herself, turns to cookbooks for ideas and inspiration. ‘‘The Australian Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book set the benchmark,’’ Webb says. First published in 1980, the book has sold more than half a million copies and has been reprinted and reissued several times. ‘‘The book is pivotal in the lives of Australian children and their birthdays, the impact of that book can’t be underestimated, it has opened up a whole new genre of cookbooks,’’ Webb says. Among them are books by speciality cake experts including local Paris Cutler of Planet Cake in Balmain. Webb published Cutler’s latest book, Planet Cake Kids. ‘‘What is different about Cutler’s book is that it goes beyond her incredible cakes to include fantastic cake toppers or figurines,’’ Webb says. ‘‘Kids can get involved and replicate out of sugar and fondant what they would otherwise make out of plasticine.’’ A book wholesaler and retailer, Shawn Casey, of The Cookery Book in Northbridge, says birthday cake cookbooks remain constant bestsellers. ‘‘A huge number of women make really elaborate cakes at home,’’ Casey says. ‘‘They come in with black fingers from rolling the fondant. They want to make the cakes they had as kids for their children.’’ Casey says along with The Australian Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book, Planet Cake Kids and Kids Party Cakes, British cake specialist and author Debbie Brown’s books are popular. ‘‘When she comes to Australia she is mobbed.’’ Brown’s books including her bestselling Enchanting Magical Cakes, Gorgeous & Gruesome Cakes for Children and Easy Party Cakes are regularly reprinted. ‘‘They are more complex than many of other books on the market, and popular with home bakers who’ve already mastered a few fabulous birthday cakes,’’ Casey says. Many of the above-mentioned books recommend using a packet cake mix as a base for decorating.
