One of the world's great wildernesses, the Kimberley spans Western Australia's north and into the Northern Territory and has just made The New York Times' PlacestoGo in 2013 list. If you've got the time, take to the roads to explore stunning natural formations, Aboriginal rock art galleries and cooling waterholes from Broome to Bungle Bungle and beyond. If your time is limited, you can absorb the region's immense beauty by combining a short air journey with a lodge or camp stays. The best time to visit is in the dry season, from May to October. BY AIR Remote doesn't have to mean being away from home for a long time. Traditional owners call it Yalrundair, Westerners call it Admiralty Gulf. Either way, the Kimberley Coastal Camp, on the shores of the gulf across from the Mitchell Plateau, is reached by float plane or helicopter. A collection of simple huts, the floors of sleeping areas are crushed shell, airconditioning is sweet, clean ocean air and the camp's bathroom roof is the open sky. Landscapes here include aquamarine bays and croc-rich creeks; the fishing includes barramundi, fighting queenfish and diamond-back mullet. Nearby headlands reached only by boat host spectacular galleries of ancient Wandjina art. The willowy ceremonial figures of Gwion Gwion (Bradshaw) art are said to be more than 40,000 years old. Just 12 guests can stay at the camp at any one time. A two-night stay at Kimberley Coastal Camp is from $3832 a person, twin share (ex-Broome); $4132 ex-Kununurra. The camp is open from late March to October. kimberleycoastalcamp.com.au. BY LAND Be it traversing the old cattle route that is the 600-kilometre Gibb River Road or spotting marine fossils and watchful crocodiles in Windjana Gorge pools, a small-group, four- wheel-drive tour is a comprehensive journey among the region's diverse landscapes, history, wildlife and people, APT's Debra Fox says. Her company's tour options include birdwatching at Bell Gorge, seeing the Gwion Gwion rock art galleries, walking through Livistona palm forests and swimming in the clear waters at King Edward River. "It's action and discovery of stunning country that's not accessible with normal cars or coaches, but the experiences also deliver much-valued knowledge because we use local guides," Fox says. As a result of partnerships with Kimberley and Aboriginal communities, APT has a network of accommodation, including Bell Gorge Wilderness Lodge, Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge and the Kimberley landmark, El Questro. "Admittedly, these lodges are very comfortable -- fresh, crisp linen on beds in private tented cabins equipped with en suite bathrooms and a deck -- so our guests are not roughing it," Fox says. Rather, lodge locations help maximise the adventure; think crocodiles lurking in El Questro's Chamberlain Gorge, the rich wash of sunset over the Cockburn Range at Home Valley Station or the mighty river that gives its name to Fitzroy River Lodge. Further maximising the options for travellers, APT has itineraries ranging from a four-wheel- drive guided tours to self-drive travel, with stays at APT-owned lodges and camps, to small-ship cruising and Kimberley air safaris, as well as combined land, air and sea tours. A 13-day small-group Kimberley Complete tour, round trip from Broome in a deluxe four-wheel-drive costs from $7895 a person, twin share. aptouring.com.au. 4 TRAVEL The Kimberley SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2013 THE SUN-HERALD
