''The walk into the falls with our indigenous guides is a highlight of expeditions,'' says Outback Spirit Tours' owner Andre Ellis. When asked about his favourite place, David Mobbs nominates Tunnel Creek in the King Leopold Ranges. "You walk through a 750-metre tunnel of marbled rock, torch in hand, and the colours and the views up into the ceiling . . . there's just something so inspiring about it,'' he says. Mobbs is the founder of Sacred Earth Safaris and with his wife, Danielle, hosts four-wheel-drive tours through the Kimberley and Northern Territory. A maximum of nine guests can join a tour and accommodation ranges from lodge and hotel stays to rolling out your swag and camping. A 10-night trip from Broome to Darwin (or the reverse) costs from $5495 a person. Journeys take place from May 4 to September 6. sacredearthsafaris.com.au. BY SEA Cruising the Kimberley allows for experiences ranging from sailing to dramatic King George Falls and Vansittart Bay, where a US Air Force DC3 now rests after it crashed during World War II, to Jar Island, a favourite stop for its exceptional and accessible Bradshaw paintings. The nature reserve of the Lacepede Islands is home to terns and green turtles, while the 800 islands of the Buccaneer Archipelago yield empty, white sand beaches. The Kimberley coastline is so sparsely populated that some of it remains unmapped and unnamed. Just a handful of small passenger ships sail its coastal waters, including the 35-metre catamaran the Coral Princess -- fresh from a $1-million refurbishment -- and its sister ship, the Oceanic Discoverer. Each ship undertakes itineraries from Broome to Darwin and the reverse, accompanied by guest lecturers. Both vessels have an Xplorer excursion boat on the main deck, which is hydraulically lifted into the waters for in-depth exploring and shore landings. The 48-passenger Coral Princess has 10-night voyages priced from $7190 a person, twin share. The 72-passenger Oceanic Discoverer has 10-night voyages from $8790 a person, twin share. coralprincess.com.au. The 18-passenger Kimberley Quest II takes passengers to prime barramundi fishing grounds as well as cruising the coast's ancient and diverse landscapes. The vessel's 2013 itineraries include a 14-day expedition from Broome to Wyndham in the state's far north (and the reverse); 8-day Mitchell River to Wyndham fly- cruise sailings and eight-day Broome to the Hunter River fly-cruise journeys and reverse. A 14-day Kimberley Quest II cruise is from $13, 305 a person, twin share. kimberleyquest.com.au. Orion Expedition Cruises takes passengers via Com, a port in East Timor, on its 10-night expeditions between Broome and Darwin (and the reverse). When Orion's 106-passenger ship drops anchor along the Kimberley coastline, optional excursions include helicopter flights--agreatwaytosee epic gorges, rivers and landscapes. A Kimberley Expedition costs from $8710 a person, twin share. orionexpeditions.com. TRAVEL 5 The Kimberley SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2013 THE SUN-HERALD
